NCRHA Matchups of the Week - January 28-29, 2023 - The Results!

The results are in from the featured matchups last weekend where events were held in Oakland, CA, Queen Creek, AZ, Manchester, MO, and Taylors, SC.

 

NCRHA Division I Matchup of the Week

Arizona State University vs. Grand Canyon University

Saturday, January 28 – 3pm

Season Head to Head: prior to this weekend: Arizona State leads season series 2-1

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Arizona State leads season series 3-1, with 6-3 win

Arizona State’s DI squad goes 4-0 on the weekend, defeating DII teams Cal Poly, CSU Fullerton and University of Arizona, as well as DI rival Grand Canyon by a score of 6-3. ASU scored 4 goals in the 1st, to GCU’s 1. Goals 1 and 2 were scored in the first 2 minutes of play, by Matt Cornish and Cole Carpenter. Cornish would add his 2nd goal on the power play later in the 1st. Penalties filled the 1st period, 2 for each team in the 2nd and 2 for ASU in the 3rd. ASU netted 2 power play goals to GCU’s 1, finishing with a 6-3 win.

Both teams next travel to Palatine, IL to face MCRHL opponents like Bethel, Lindenwood, Henry Ford and Michigan State. They will then close out the season on Feb. 18-19 in Corona, CA with a 5th and final matchup against each other, plus various other WCRHL opponents.

 

NCRHA Division II Matchup of the Week

University of Arizona vs. CSU Fullerton

Saturday, January 28 – 1pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Arizona leads season series 1-0, with a 6-2 win on Oct. 30

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Arizona leads season 2-0, with 7-4 win this weekend

University of Arizona went 2-2 this weekend, winning both of their games against fellow DII opponents and dropping the 2 games to DI opponents. In this featured matchup, Arizona gets the win to go up 2-0 on the season series, led this game by Alec Cadieux’s 3 goals, followed by Hudson Fox and Dylan Smith with 1 goal and 1 assist each. U of A goaltender Ethan Zorbas gets the win, stopping 17 of CSUF’s 21 shots.

The two teams will then play in 1 more event this season, Feb. 18-19 in Corona, CA where they will face each other as well as round out their season against other WCRHL DI, DII, DIII and AA opponents.

 

NCRHA Division III Matchup of the Week

University of Colorado vs. UC Santa Barbara

Saturday, January 28 – 11am

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: 0-0, teams have not yet met this season

Season Head to Head after this weekend: San Jose State leads series with 5-4 shootout win this weekend

The WCRHL event in Oakland, CA started off with a bang, with San Jose State and University of Colorado playing it all the way to a shootout. Colorado opened the scoring 3 minutes in with a goal by Jason Rieger, who also netted 2 assists later in the game. San Jose State bounced back with 2 goals late in the 1st by Austin Palmer and Patrick Mahoney. Mahoney would then take a penalty 35 seconds later, and Colorado would capitalize on it just 38 seconds into the 2nd period on a goal from Cameron King. Colorado’s Austin Granmoe would score with 16 seconds left in the 2nd to take a 1 goal lead into the 3rd period. San Jose State’s Patrick Mahoney and Joey Martin would score in the 3rd to go up by 1, but Colorado’s Alex Masini would net a short-handed goal with just 40 seconds left in the game to force overtime. A scoreless overtime would take the game to a shootout, and Justin Norcia would score the game-winner, for the 5-4 shootout win.

San Jose State went on to win their other 3 games on the weekend, and take over the #1 spot in the WCRHL Division III standings. Colorado would win their other 3 games as well, and remain the #1 DIII team in the SCHL.

UCSB will close out their season in Corona, CA while CU has 2 remaining events (Denton, TX on Feb. 4 and Parker, CO on Feb. 18).

 

NCRHA Division AA Matchup of the Week

University of Arizona vs. CSU Fullerton

Saturday January 28 – 8am

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Arizona leads season series 1-0, with a 5-4 shootout win on Oct. 30

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Arizona leads season series 2-0, with a 7-4 win this weekend

The 3 WCRHL Division III teams (Arizona, Arizona State and CSU Fullerton) are battling for the top 2 spots, as 2 will head to the Conference Championships in March. This featured matchup between U of A and CSUF saw U of A’s Patrick Moore open the scoring 3:06 into the game, and he would score again in the 3rd, the team’s 5th goal, for the eventual game-winner. The first period had the teams trading goals, finishing the period at 2-2. U of A would add 2 in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd, leading Fullerton 7-2 with just under 1 minute left in the game. Fullerton would score 2 goals in the final minute to make it a 7-4 U of A win.

The teams will meet one final time on February 18 at Corona Inline, at the WCRHL’s final regular season event.

 

NCRHA Cross-Divisional Matchup of the Week

Missouri S&T (DIII) vs. Lindenwood Black (AA)

Saturday January 28 – 1pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Lindenwood Black leads season series 1-0, with a 7-4 win on Nov. 5

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Lindenwood Black leads season series 2-0, with 8-2 win this weekend

The last time Lindenwood Black played Missouri S&T, it was a 7-4 win for the Lions, the closest any MCRHL DIII team has come to this LU squad. This weekend was about the same, this time a commanding 8-2 win for the Lions. Leading scorers for LU included Jackson Wozniak (1 G, 4 A), Jeremiah Keao (3 G), Michael Sapienza (1 G, 1 A), and Matthew Tilley (2 A). Goaltender Adam Whicker stopped 15 of 17 S&T shots for the W.

LU Black went undefeated on the weekend, also defeating Maryville, SIU-Edwardsville, Kansas State and Illinois State, and now have an oustanding 13-2 record on the season.
