Jason Shields
Jr./Forward
UMSL Tritons
Jason Shields arrived at UMSL two years ago. It's been quite an eventful couple of years, from practicing for the first time in December '05, to scoring huge goals at Nationals, to becoming one of UMSL's best weapons by the beginning of the '06-07 campaign.
Shields joined the Rivermen in January 2006 after transferring from Louisiana State University, and started his UMSL career on the B Division squad.
But he didn't stay on the "B" for long -- by season's end, he had become an indispensable part of the DII national-runner-up Rivermen. Shields is a natural sniper with a rifle shot, and an exceptional athlete who plays with toughness and energy.
Shields debuted with the varsity on Jan. 22, in a key game against league rival Wash-U. He entered the game in place of an injured Wally Iverson in the second period, with UMSL ahead 2-1.
Within seconds of taking the floor for the first time, Shields scored his first goal, and it was a big one. He scored again in the third period, on his second and final shift of the game, giving him two goals in two shifts.
He saw spot duty for the rest of the regular season. But as the semester progressed, Jason's role expanded. He was a key contributor at the GPCIHL Regional Championships be ing his best hockey of the season, beyond anyone's wildest expectations, at the NCRHA National Championships. His sudden emergence was a major bonus for the Rivermen - he was simply outstanding. Jason played with amazing passion.
In '06-07, Shields returned to St. Louis looking even stronger. That much was apparent by the first period of the season's first game. Shields rifled a fifty-foot slapshot that was perfectly placed inches below the crossbar for his first goal of the new season (see video highlight below). His nasty shot gave UMSL a 2-0 lead over dangerous Truman State in a game the Rivermen would go on to win 3-0.
Jason's gamebreaking athleticism stands out from the moment his wheels start rolling. But he is also the most physical player on the roster. He consistently wins battles along the boards and in the faceoff circle, where he is UMSL's best faceoff man.
Shields was a star wrestler in high school. His grappling background makes him extremely effective in traffic, where he uses strength and leverage to win the puck and protect it from opponents.
It is not easy to find a player who performs to his full physical capability. Shields is in top condition, and seems soon to reach this high standard.
In November, the Professional Inline Hockey Association's Southside Snipers selected Shields in the league's inaugural draft. Shields joins select company as a pro: his teammates include UMSL mates Adam Clarke and Jake Shepard, both 2005-06 All-Americans.
Jason, a native of suburban New Orleans, came to UMSL after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He chose UMSL based on the perennial strength of the inline hockey club, and it was everything he expected. Jason, a junior majoring in English/Education, plans to complete his degree at UMSL.
