Trip from Tucson to Phoenix a success for University of Arizona Wildcats
The University of Arizona Division 2 squad had an extremely successful weekend, adding 4 wins to their 3-1-2 record, by defeating Cal Poly Pomona, UC San Diego, CSU Fullerton and Northern Arizona, as well as a 5-3 win in an exhibition game against Arizona State’s D3 squad.
After the D3 win, U of A faced both Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego. Arizona opened up the scoring against Cal Poly Pomona, but Pomona counted 1 minute later, and scored 2 more goals in the 1st, taking a 3-1 lead into the 1st intermission. Arizona turned it on in the 2nd, outscoring Pomona 5-2 in the 2nd and not looking back. Arizona would win the game 11-5. Jacob Toro led the scoring with 3 goals and 4 assists. For Pomona, Ian Duffy netted 2 to lead the Broncos. Arizona got up early on UC San Diego, scoring 5 consecutive goals in the 1st. They went on to cruise to a 8-1 victory, led by Taylor Knight’s 3 goals and Jesse Rooney’s 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists). Rooney also had a 4 point game in the Wildcats win against CSU Fullerton (1 goal, 3 assists).
Saturday night, the Wildcats handed CSU Fullerton their first loss of the season. Fullerton jumped out to an early lead and led 3-1 at the end of the 1st. The 2nd period was all Arizona, scoring 3 goals to take the lead 4-3 into the 3rd, with a couple goals that you may call flukey, but were made possible by hard work and determination. The same can be said in the 3rd, when just under 4 minutes in, Arizona’s Matt Duffy hustled from his defensive half up the left side of the rink, with a defender on his heels, and backhanded it blocker side on the Fullerton goaltender. Arizona added another goal just 1 minute later, going up 6-3. Fullerton’s Troy Yano added 2 goals in the 3rd to get within 1, and with the goaltender pulled for the last minute were unable to tie it up.
Sunday morning was the 5th and final game of the weekend for U of A, as they faced the newest team to the league, Northern Arizona University. NAU got up to a 3-0 lead heading into the 1st intermission, thanks in part to 2 power play goals, 1 each from Trevor Riffey and Camden Taylor. In the 2nd period the teams traded goals, and we went into the 3rd period with the score NAU 5, U of A 2. In the 3rd period, Arizona turned it on, scoring 4 goals to NAU’s 1, and sending the goal into overtime. In the 3-on-3, 4-minute overtime, both teams played conservatively and had limited chances, but it was Arizona’s Jacob Toro, scoring his second goal of the game with 11 seconds remaining in overtime, netting the win for the Wildcats. Other than Toro, 5 different Wildcats scored in the game, while NAU was led by Trevor Riffey (2 goals, 2 assists) and Camden Taylor (1 goal, 2 assists).
