UC Santa Barbara sweeps Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 3-game series

Posted: January 23, 2010 3:00AM; Updated: January 24, 2010 1:33PM The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs sent their 3 teams down to Santa Barbara on Friday night, to face off against the 3 teams from UC Santa Barbara. This was the 2nd home event that the Gauchos have hosted at their on-campus rink this season.
At 5:30pm, Cal Poly SLO B Green faced off against UC Santa Barbara B Blue. This proved to be the closest game of the evening, as UC Santa Barbara B Blue prevailed by a score of 3-1. 7 different players each had 1 point in the game, with the deciding goal coming at 6:46 of the 1st period, scored by Zachary Wilson, with an assist to Steve Decou. UCSB B Blue was up 2-0 at that point in the game, and carried that 2-goal lead through most of the 2nd period. Cal Poly SLO B Green got on the scoresheet with 2:46 remaining in the 2nd period. UC Santa Barbara B Blue put the nail in the coffin at the halfway mark of the 3rd period with a goal from Nick Cochran.
At 6:30pm, Cal Poly SLO B Gold faced off against UC Santa Barbara B Gold. In their first matchup back in November 2009, UC Santa Barbara B Gold defeated Cal Poly SLO B Gold by a score of 8-1. This game would prove to be no different, as the final score was a 10-0 win for the Gauchos. Bryce Welke earned a hat trick for the Gauchos to lead them in goal scoring. The game-winning goal was scored just 34 seconds into the game, by Max Ryan of the Gauchos.
The final game of the night featured the Division I teams from Cal Poly SLO and UC Santa Barbara. UCSB scoring was led by Adam Gould, who finished with 3 goals. Charlie Delkeskamp and Brian Costello led Cal Poly with 2 points a piece. UCSB scored the first 5 goals of the game, and it was 5-0 at the end of the 2nd period. Cal Poly fought back in the last half of the 3rd period, outscoring the Gauchos 3-1, but it proved to not be enough, and the UCSB Gauchos completed the sweep by a score of 6-3.
